Malé-Thilafushi Bridge Project, Maldives

Engineer of Record (Module 17 Bridge) | 2023 | Aecom India / AFCONS

The project involved the design and implementation of the Malé-Thilafushi Bridge in the Maldives, a $500M initiative backed by India. The scope included the detailed design for Module 17 bridge and transverse analysis for other navigation bridges within the project. Led by Varun, MCS (now Spannovation) was responsible for designing a 337m long bridge with a span arrangement of 96m - 148m - 93m, and a 25m wide precast box girder with varying depth. The project also required the design and placement of bored piles supporting the main and transition piers, taking into account wind loads and marine actions.

Nagpur Metro – Reach – 2 & 3, Nagpur, India

Lead Design Engineer | 2018 | AFCONS

The project involved designing the Metro Viaduct (Reach 3) of Nagpur Metro. Responsibilities included the design of a 36m precast single cell segmental box, post-tensioned cantilever cross beams at the concourse level of Metro Stations, and pier caps for the entire viaduct following the Limit State Design philosophy of IRS codes. In Reach-2, the duties included the detailed design of a steel composite superstructure and substructure (with a pile foundation) of 44m with a 173m radius of curvature to support two parallel tracks of Nagpur Metro. This work was performed during employment with KSCPL.

Approaches of Zuari Stay Cable Bridge, Goa, India

Lead Design Engineer – Independent Review | 2016-17 | Dilip Buildcon Ltd

Responsible for proof checking a 3km long viaduct, which includes a Road Over Bridge (ROB). Additionally, managed the design of a 36m wide superstructure (Spine & Wing System) for the approaches of the Zuari Cable Stayed bridge on NH17/NH66 on the Panjim Mangalore Section in Goa, Package I & III. The design of the 36m wide superstructure (Spine & Wing System), which is the widest deck in India, was proposed with a structural configuration that saved the contractor from having to set up a new casting bed/formwork. This was achieved by reusing the same spine designed for the 50m span - 28m wide deck.

Extra-dosed bridge over river Ganga, Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, India

The project involved designing a 2.544 km, two-lane highway bridge over the River Ganga. It comprised eight units of extra-dosed bridges, each measuring 318m (87m+144m+87m). Varun was responsible for the design of the entire bridge. This included the superstructure (both longitudinal and transverse analysis), pylon, pile foundation, spill-through abutment, and intermediate piers, all in accordance with IRC codes. Lucknow Metro – Phase-1, Lucknow, India

Lead Design Engineer | 2014-15 | LMRC

The project involved designing the first priority section (8km) out of the 36km North-South Corridor for the Lucknow Metro. Varun supervised the design of the entire structure of the Normal Viaduct and the special spans, which included a FCM Bridge as per IRS. Additionally, I developed all the required tools and methodologies for the timely and effective completion of the project. This work was performed during employment with Systra.

Ho Chi Minh City Metro, HCMC, Vietnam

Design Engineer | 2013-14 | NJPT

The project involved designing a 17km elevated viaduct for the Ho Chi Minh City Metro. Varun was responsible for all aspects of the Rach Chiec Bridge design, which spans 231m (63m+105m+63m), erected using the balanced cantilever method. This bridge supports two tracks for the HCMC metro and was developed in close collaboration with Systra Korea. The deck is made up of a cast-in-situ single cell box girder section, and the piers are supported by pile foundations that are 80m deep. This work was performed during employment with Systra.
