Woodroffe Pedestrian Bridge

The Woodroffe Pedestrian Bridge project involved assembling and erecting four single-span Algonquin steel bowstring trusses, each 35.4m long. The 143m bridge features a 5m wide truss supporting a 4.3m clear multi-user pathway across a transit corridor in Ottawa, ON. This project is part of the broader Confederation Line Stage 2 project (OLRT extension), which expands Ottawa's light rail network to the East. As part of the OLRT extension, pedestrian bridges have been installed at various locations, such as Green’s Creek, Place d’Orléans Station, and Trim Station. These bridges enhance connectivity to the future OLRT stations.

Steel Erected: Four single bowstring truss spans, each weighing 45MT, were erected.

Erection Methodology: Each truss was stick-built on temporary dunnage supports adjacent to their spans using an HTC 8675 crane and a telehandler. Eight temporary supports were set to specific elevations to facilitate the assembly of two truss halves before splicing and to account for truss pre-camber. Once connected, each full truss span was secured with temporary restraints until lifted by a GROVE GMK 6350 from the staging location to its permanent position. A 50' long spreader bar was used to connect the rigging, lifting the truss at four points located on the bottom chord of the truss.

Site Preparation: A 6m wide leveled pathway was created 4m south of the bridge centerline for delivery trucks during assembly and for operating cranes during erection. Another leveled pathway, 3m wide, was created 15m south of the first pathway for delivery trucks. Spans 2 and 4 were assembled north of the bridge alignment, receiving deliveries from the first pathway, while spans 1 and 3 were assembled south of the alignment, receiving deliveries from the second pathway. The GMK 6350 crane moved sequentially along the 6m pathway from the East to the West, lifting each span to its permanent location. Finally, the HTC 6750 was used to lift in the precast deck panels.
